Can you transport a firearm through any state ?
To make a long story short yes you can.
Federal law known as the Firearms Owners’ Protection Act (FOPA) protects persons who are transporting firearms for lawful purposes from local restrictions which would otherwise prohibit the transportation of such items. Also known as the Safe Passage Provision under FOPA
Under FOPA, a person may transport a firearm from any place to any place but they still must obey State and local laws.
The easiest way to do this if you are traveling through a State that you cannot legally carry your firearm, it must be unloaded and locked out of reach (Not readily available) to the driver or any occupants of the vehicle. If your vehicle does not have a trunk, the unloaded firearm must be in a locked container (not a glove box or console). Ammunition must also be either locked out of reach in the trunk or in a locked in a separate container
You should be warned that some state and local governments treat FOPA as an “affirmative defense” that is used after an arrest. Will you win the court case? Most likely (we are not attorneys) but is will also cost you a ton money and its not worth it.
When traveling, first do your research and always keep all your keep your licensing on you as well as a copy of FOPA.
